Munich, Germany (October 1, 2008) — ABBYY Europe, a leading provider of document recognition and linguistic technologies, today announced a significant expansion of its linguistic products business and its ABBYY Lingvo dictionary software product line. ABBYY Lingvo x3 is a new generation of electronic dictionaries which combines reliable content, powerful word look-up and intuitive software in a single product. Leveraging extensive expertise in linguistic technology and dictionary interface design, ABBYY delivers a product which is easily accessible and truly convenient.

“Modern media and the Internet are connecting people at a global level, increasing the speed of communications and the need for efficient translation tools,” explained Jupp Stoepetie, CEO of ABBYY Europe. “ABBYY Lingvo is designed for the modern student, business person, or traveler who needs easy and fast access to quality word translations. It delivers a wealth of respected dictionary titles via powerful software for productive language learning and work.”

Shipping today are four core language versions for ABBYY Lingvo x3, which offer word translations from German or English into German, English, French, Russian, Italian, Spanish and back in various combinations.

Reliable Language Content

ABBYY has teamed up with leading dictionary publishers to deliver high-quality content. Through these partnerships, ABBYY is able to offer content from such dictionaries as Oxford—Duden, Oxford-Hachette, Oxford-Paravia and others, ensuring accurate and reliable word translations. ABBYY Lingvo products include renowned explanatory dictionaries for English, German and Russian and Oxford’s collections of correspondence samples (i.e. personal and social letters, CVs, etc.). They also draw dictionary content for the Russian language from respected publishers and ABBYY’s own publishing house.

ABBYY Lingvo’s comprehensive dictionaries provide accurate translation of hundreds of thousands of headwords and phrases.* The dictionaries contain detailed entry information for keywords, such as pronunciation keys, example sentences, grammatical descriptions and inflected forms of words. In addition, ABBYY Lingvo x3 provides audio pronunciations of keywords recorded for ABBYY by native speakers.

The Words You Need, Quickly and Easily

ABBYY Lingvo is designed for easy, quick word look-up. Word look-up functions range from “instant” translation via a Pop-up dialogue to advanced full-text search. When working in other applications such as Microsoft® Word or a Web browser, users can get quick "instant" translations in a pop-up dialogue without leaving the application.  Users simply point the mouse cursor to a word and a brief translation appears in a Pop-up dialogue. By clicking on the links within the Pop-up dialogue, users can get more information on the word and open the full word entry.

Other functions guide users to the words they need even if they are not sure about spelling. For example, a Spelling Suggestions option offers alternative words if the word typed in is misspelled. A powerful Wildcard Search helps find the correct word using “?” and “*” symbols for unknown characters. Users can easily scroll through this list to find the word or phrase they need or see derivatives or words that have similar spelling. To save time retyping frequently used words, a Word History provides a list of the last 100 words searched.

ABBYY Lingvo’s advanced full-text search function allows users to find all available information on a word and its use in all dictionary content.  Its interface also provides a toolbar link to Wikipedia for finding additional information on a given word and to Internet searches for learning more about its use in the native environment.

Underlying the ABBYY Lingvo’s search capabilities is solid experience in developing linguistic and retrieval technologies. ABBYY’s expertise in linguistics and morphology also helps support advanced search capabilities such as the wildcard search, search of compound words and look-up by  grammatical forms of words. The entire dictionary content has been processed and specifically optimised using those technologies to enable quick and comprehensive word look-up.

Convenient, Intuitive Interface

ABBYY Lingvo’s powerful search functionality and comprehensive dictionary database are enhanced by its intuitive and flexible interface which adds greater ease to work with languages. The Windows-like interface provides quick access to product functionality via flexible toolbars and drop-down menus. It is also easy to work with the various Lingvo dictionaries because changing dictionaries or languages requires a simple click on a button. There are two separate windows for word look-up functions and for viewing word translations, which makes it simple to look up multiple words at one time. The application allows users to keep word translation windows open while working in a document or viewing a Web site.  ABBYY Lingvo x3 also includes virtual keyboards for typing in foreign words with special accents or symbols and Cyrillic-based characters.

Expandable Software: Additional Languages and Language Combinations to Suit Your Needs

ABBYY Lingvo can grow as a person’s language needs grow. In addition to the four core product versions, ABBYY offers individual language pairs and combinations for purchase based on a customer’s needs.  For example, a person who starts with a German-English version of Lingvo, may later add German-French dictionaries or other language combinations.  Additional dictionaries and languages can be easily installed within the same ABBYY Lingvo software.  Adding new dictionaries is as simple as a double-click or a drag and drop action. Additional dictionary content can also be accessed and purchased online from within the Lingvo software.  Users can also add words by creating or adding their own “user dictionaries.”
