The new line of ABBYY Lingvo electronic dictionaries now includes ABBYY Lingvo 8.0 Multilingual Edition, ABBYY Lingvo 8.0 for Pocket PC, as well as an updated and expanded version of ABBYY Lingvo English-Russian Edition
Moscow, Russia, June 04, 2002 ― ABBYY Software House, Russia’s leading manufacturer of OCR and linguistics software, has announced a new series of electronic dictionaries, ABBYY Lingvo 8.0. The new line will include three products: a new version of the English-Russian-English dictionary ABBYY Lingvo 8.0, a multilingual dictionary ABBYY Lingvo 8.0 Multilingual Edition*, and a version of ABBYY Lingvo 8.0 designed specifically for Pocket PC.
“Until recently, Lingvo’s development has been directed toward adding new dictionaries and expanding the old ones, all this within the constraints of the English-Russian-English version. Now we have decided to cover more languages, thereby broadening the range of potential customers who will find the new versions useful. ABBYY Lingvo 8.0 (English-Russian-English) will be extremely useful for all Russians living abroad and all those who study the Russian language. ABBYY Lingvo 8.0 Multilingual Edition will help all those who use both Russian and either English, German, French or Italian in their everyday communication.
“We are also about to launch a version of Lingvo for Pocket PC for people who like to have a universal dictionary always ready at hand. Now all Russians traveling abroad or living outside Russia will be able to take Lingvo with them. We hope these new products will be just as popular with users as their English-Russian-English predecessor, which is the best-selling electronic dictionary in Russia,” said ABBYY’s CEO Sergey Andreyev.
In ABBYY Lingvo 8.0, the Universal and Computer dictionaries have been updated. Apart from that, now it includes the new LingvoGrammatical (English-Russian) dictionary, which is essentially a grammar reference book. The Grammatical dictionary contains 500 entries dealing with major grammar issues and providing users with numerous examples. With the new Grammatical dictionary Lingvo can be regarded as a true electronic English textbook, since now users can not only translate single words, but also produce idiomatic sentences and study the basics of the English language.
ABBYY Lingvo 8.0 English-Russian English is ideal for those users who need quick and precise translations from Russian into English and vice versa. There are more than 1,200,000 entries in Lingvo’s 19 general and specialized dictionaries.
The multilingual version, ABBYY Lingvo 8.0 Multilingual Edition, supports eight translation directions: English-Russian, German-Russian, French-Russian, Italian-Russian, Russian-English, Russian-German, Russian-French, and Russian-Italian.
ABBYY Lingvo 8.0 (desktop versions) main features:
ABBYY Lingvo 8.0 for Pocket PC has been designed specifically for handheld computers. On the one hand, this version has all the functionality of the desktop versions, and on the other hand, it has been tailored specifically for handheld devices. The standard version of ABBYY Lingvo 8.0 for Pocket PC includes more than 40 dictionaries containing more than 2,400,000 entries (same as in Multilingual Edition), it supports eight translation directions, and requires 5 MB for minimal installation. You can install/deinstall any dictionary creating an optimal configuration that will best suit your needs. If you currently do not need all the dictionaries supplied, you can choose to install only the smaller dictionaries (Lingvo Compact English-Russian-English). And if you are planning a trip to France for example, you can install dictionaries of only one translation direction, i.e. Russian-French-Russian. ABBYY Lingvo 8.0 for Pocket PC is expected to be launched in the middle summer of 2002.
“Lingvo for Pocket PC is a totally new product on the software market aimed at handheld computers. It is the first time the users of Pocket PC have been offered a reasonably priced collection of unabridged professional dictionaries for several European languages. Now Lingvo dictionaries can be used not only when working with texts on a PC, but also when reading books, newspapers, notices, menus in a restaurant, etc. We hope that Russians travelling or living abroad – businessmen and tourists alike – will find the dictionary particularly useful. Which is why we are releasing only a multilingual edition of Lingvo for Pocket PC,” said ABBYY’s Vice-President Konstantin Anisimovich.
ABBYY Lingvo 8.0 for Pocket PC available as of middle summer 2002.
