Barcelona, Spain (GSMA, Stand 2B25 in Hall 2) February 16, 2009 – ABBYY, a leading provider of document recognition, data capture and linguistic software, today announced that it will demonstrate a preview version of its FotoTranslate mobile application at the GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, February 16-19. ABBYY FotoTranslate is a seamless combination of ABBYY’s award-winning optical character recognition (OCR) technology and mobile dictionary software. This combined technology showcases the easiest and fastest way to translate words by simply photographing them with a built-in camera on mobile devices. In just a few seconds, the program automatically recognizes the photographed word, looks it up in the dictionary database and shows the translation on the phone screen.
Having such a program installed on a mobile device, a user can translate words without typing them by hand, without opening a separate dictionary application, and without the need to be connected to the Internet. All this makes it especially convenient in travels and business trips or when translating words from unfamiliar languages with unusual characters.
“ABBYY FotoTranslate technology is designed for “mobile” people who travel abroad and need to quickly understand important information written in a foreign language – a sign on a building or dish ingredients in a restaurant menu,” said Katya Solntseva, director of mobile products department at ABBYY. “In this application, we for the first time combined together two of ABBYY’s key development focuses – text recognition technologies and dictionary software.”
ABBYY’s widely renowned OCR technology, underlying ABBYY FotoTranslate, accurately converts images captured with a camera into editable and searchable text.
With its intelligent image processing algorithm, the OCR technology is capable to correct distortions typical for photos of text and makes the images suitable for recognizing text. ABBYY FotoTranslate also includes powerful word look-up capabilities and high-quality dictionary content ensured by ABBYY’s extensive expertise in linguistic research and dictionary software development.
The preview version of ABBYY FotoTranslate will showcase instant translation of words from German, French, Spanish, and Russian into English and from English into Spanish. To get more information and to test the program, please visit ABBYY Stand at GSMA, February 16-19.
